WORKSHOP REPORT

Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice in Partial Discharge Testing (IEC 60270)

A one-day workshop titled “Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice in Partial Discharge Testing (IEC 60270)” was successfully conducted on 22 January 2026 (Thursday) from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering & Technology, Pauh Putra Campus, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).

The workshop was organized by the IEEE Dielectrics & Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Malaysia Chapter and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering & Technology, UniMAP, in collaboration with MHH Condition Monitoring Sdn. Bhd. and Malaysia High Voltage Network (MyHVNet). The program aimed to strengthen understanding of Partial Discharge (PD) principles and industrial diagnostic practices in accordance with IEC 60270.

Objectives

The workshop was designed to:

  • Provide fundamental and advanced knowledge of PD principles and methodologies.

  • Compare offline and online PD testing techniques, including advantages and limitations.

  • Enhance understanding of PRPD (Phase-Resolved Partial Discharge) interpretation.

  • Bridge theoretical concepts with practical industrial applications.

  • Share best practices in insulation diagnostic assessment.

Speakers

The workshop featured experienced industry and academic experts:

  • Ir. Mohd Helmy Halim Abdul Majid, Managing Director, MHH Condition Monitoring Sdn. Bhd.

  • Ahmad Syukri Abd Rahman, Assistant Operation Manager, MHH Condition Monitoring Sdn. Bhd.

  • Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohamad Nur Khairul Hafizi Rohani, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP)

Their presentations combined practical field experience with academic insights, providing a comprehensive learning experience.

Program Highlights

The program included:

  • Introduction to Partial Discharge (PD)

  • Offline vs. Online PD Techniques: Comparison, Advantages & Limitations

  • Artificial Intelligence Integration in PD Diagnostics

  • Case Study Discussions

  • Live Demonstration of Partial Discharge Testing

  • Interactive Q&A and Technical Discussion

The live demonstration session enabled participants to observe PD measurement setup, data acquisition, and interpretation of results, enhancing practical understanding.

Participant Benefits

Participants received:

  • Certificate of Participation

  • Meals and refreshments

  • CPD points for UniMAP staff

The workshop attracted participants from industry, institutions, and students, reflecting strong interest in high-voltage condition monitoring and insulation diagnostics.

Conclusion

The workshop successfully bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation of Partial Discharge testing. Through expert-led sessions, real-world case studies, and live demonstrations, participants gained valuable insights into proper PD measurement techniques and interpretation aligned with IEC 60270 standards.

The collaboration between IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter, UniMAP, MHH Condition Monitoring Sdn. Bhd., and MyHVNet strengthened academia–industry engagement and contributed to professional development in the field of electrical insulation and condition monitoring.
