1. Introduction

A hands-on workshop titled “Introduction to Solar Pump and Its Maintenance” was successfully conducted to educate and train local villagers on the operation and upkeep of the newly installed solar-powered irrigation system. The initiative aims to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability through the adoption of green technology in rural farming practices.

2. Objectives

  • To introduce the concept and benefits of solar-powered irrigation systems.

  • To provide practical training on the operation and maintenance of solar pumps.

  • To assign key responsibilities and ensure secure and efficient system usage.

3. Participants

The session was facilitated by:

  • 3 IEEE volunteers

  • 1 IEEE student member

  • 4 UniMAP students

It was attended by:

  • 10 local villagers, each representing a family that will utilize the solar pump system.

  • Head of the village

  • 3 local authority representatives

4. Workshop Agenda

a. Registration
The workshop began with participant registration and distribution of workshop materials.

b. Theoretical Session: Introduction to Solar Energy and Solar Pump Systems
Participants were introduced to the principles of solar energy, the benefits of solar irrigation, and the components and working mechanism of the solar pump system. This session emphasized the system’s sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and suitability for local agricultural needs.

c. Break / Rest Session

d. Practical Session: Hands-On Training
Participants engaged in practical demonstrations on:

  • Starting and stopping the solar pump

  • Daily inspection routines

  • Basic troubleshooting steps

  • Safety protocols

Each participant had the opportunity to interact directly with the equipment and ask questions regarding its operation.

5. System Access and Monitoring Protocol

To ensure secure usage and prevent unauthorized access:

  • Only one designated person-in-charge (PIC), appointed from among the villagers, will hold the key to access the main control board of the system.

  • While the system status and environmental conditions can be monitored online, control functions are restricted to the appointed PIC to maintain safety and operational integrity.

6. Conclusion

The workshop successfully equipped the local community with foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary to operate and maintain the solar pump system. The participation of IEEE volunteers and UniMAP students demonstrated effective collaboration between academia and the community.

The engagement of local authorities and the village leadership reinforced the project’s long-term sustainability and community ownership.

7. Acknowledgments

The organizers wish to express their gratitude to:

  • IEEE HTB SIGHT
  • IEEE TECH4GOOD
  • IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter

  • UniMAP student volunteers

  • The village leadership and local authorities

  • All participating villagers for their active engagement and commitment
