8-9th July 2019: Two-day Workshop on Scientific Writing

The Institute of High Voltage and High Current, with the technical support of the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Malaysia Chapter and Malaysian High Voltage Network (MyHVnet), has successfully organised a Two-day Workshop on Scientific Writing on 8 and 9 July 2019 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The facilitator of the workshop was Dr. Yasmin Shamsudin from Scientific Writing Coach of YS Consulting. The workshop was attended by 30 participants, who are mainly postgraduate students. It is hoped that the experience and knowledge shared during the workshop are beneficial to all participants and consequently, the number of published papers from institutions in Malaysia can be increased.

21st August 2019: Technical Talk on Protection Devices

he IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Malaysia Chapter technically supported a technical talk on “Protection Devices: Miniature Circuit Breakers and Residual Current Circuit Breakers” organised by the Institute of High Voltage and High Current (IVAT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), on 21 August 2019 at IVAT, UTM Johor Bahru.

During the talk, Mr. Geoffrey Quek, from Hager Engineering (M) Sdn. Bhd., shared his experience on the importance of protection devices and different categories of protection devices. In addition, the principles behind the operation of miniature circuit breakers and residual current circuit breakers were explained to the audience. Appropriate selections of protection devices, especially for residential buildings, were also highlighted. The talk later ended with a question-and-answer session between Mr. Quek and the audience, which allowed the audience to obtain further clarification regarding the topic.

DEIS and IVAT sincerely thank Mr. Quek for his kindness to share his expertise in the field of protection devices and hope to have more events like this in the future.

26th June 2019: Electrifying the Future: An Industry-Academic Knowledge Sharing Session

On Wednesday 26th June 2019, IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Malaysia Chapter, in collaboration with the Institute of Power Engineering UNITEN and the Malaysian High Voltage Network (MyHVnet) had organized a half-day seminar entitled “Electrifying the Future: An Industry-Academic Knowledge Sharing Session”. This programme aimed to gather industry professionals and experts, as well as prominent researchers and academicians in the field of electrical engineering, to discuss the future of the electricity industry.

Two distinguished speakers were invited to present their lecture at this seminar. The first speaker was Ir Dr Mohd Fadzil Mohd Siam, the Chief Strategy Officer of TNB Research Sdn Bhd. His lecture entitled “Reimagining Grid of the Future – Our Roles and Perspective” focuses on the changing energy industry landscape in Malaysia, and TNB’s roles to support the Malaysia Electricity Supply Industry through its ‘Reimagining TNB’ strategic initiatives. The second lecture was given by Professor Paul Lewin, Head of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton. His presentation entitled “Future Electricity Networks – Ensuring Reliable Electrical Transmission and Distribution” discusses the evolution of UK transmission networks and the challenges in ensuring the delivery of a reliable and sustainable electricity network.

Around 30 participants from various universities and industries attended the seminar. Throughout this programme, valuable experiences were exchanged and fruitful discussions were made between the industry and academia within the electrical engineering domain. The committee members of the IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter would like to express their sincere thanks to the Institute of Power Engineering UNITEN and the Malaysian High Voltage Network (MyHVnet) for their commitment and support in making this seminar a success.

18th April 2019: High Voltage Seminar at IVAT, UTM

High voltage seminar at IVAT, UTM

The IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Malaysia Chapter, in collaboration with the School of Electrical Engineering (SKE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), successfully organised High Voltage Seminar on 18 April 2019 at SKE, UTM Johor Bahru. About 100 undergraduate students undertaking the High Voltage Technology course attended the seminar delivered by Ms. Nor Hidayah Rahim, a PhD candidate of the Institute of High Voltage and High Current (IVAT), UTM. Various interesting insights on dielectrics and electrical insulation, especially those related to nanodielectrics, were delivered by Ms. Hidayah during the seminar. Ms. Hidayah also shared with the students about research life at IVAT, high voltage research activities carried out at IVAT, and potential research areas that ones can explore for research purposes.

At the end of the seminar, an educational video about the IEEE DEIS was broadcasted to the students. Through the seminar, it is hoped that the students are aware of the latest research and networking relevant to high voltage engineering apart from obtaining their knowledge through classroom lectures and textbooks. This would allow the students to enhance learning through research information, in line with UTM’s effort to enrich the nexus between research, learning and teaching. Course Coordinator Dr. Noor Azlinda Ahmad and Seminar Coordinator Ir. Dr. Lau Kwan Yiew sincerely thank Ms. Hidayah for voluntarily delivering the seminar to the students.

16th April 2019: Visit to Janamanjung 500kV GIL Substation

On 16th April 2019, IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Malaysia Chapter, in collaboration with Malaysian High Voltage Network (MyHVnet), had organized an industrial visit to Janamanjung Main Intake Substation, Perak. The main objective of this visit was to learn about the implementation of Malaysia’s first and only gas insulated line (GIL) system. The system, which operates at 50Hz 500kV/4000A, was commissioned in 2015 to enable the connection between the Janamanjung substation to the 500kV overhead lines.

There were 20 participants from various academic institutions in Malaysia including UNITEN, UNIMAP, UTEM, UTHM, UTM, USM and TARC, as well as industry representatives from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) LABS, who joined the visit. The half-day programme started off with a presentation by Ir. Dr. Iryani Mohamed Rawi, who was part of the team deploying the GIL system, sharing some background about the project and her valuable first-hand experience undertaking it. After the presentation, a site visit was conducted, giving the participants clearer insight and exposure on the system. Then, a visit to the control room that monitors the performance of the GIL system concluded the programme.

The committee members of the IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter would like to express their sincere thanks to Grid Maintenance Department, TNB for allowing and accommodating the visit to Janamanjung Main Intake Substation. The support from the members of MyHVnet were also acknowledged for making the industrial visit a successful event.

11th March 2019: Laboratory Visit to Institute of High Voltage and High Current, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

On 11 March 2019, undergraduate students of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) undertaking the course “High Voltage Technology” had the chance to visit the high voltage laboratory of the Institute of High Voltage and High Current, UTM. During the visit, the students had a tour around the laboratory to know better about practical high voltage equipment, such as the impulse generator, AC/DC generator, transformer and switchgear. The importance of high voltage insulation was also conveyed to the students through a laboratory demonstration of glass insulation flashover. In addition, the students were also briefed about safety concerning the use of high voltage laboratory.

The laboratory tour intended to enhance the students’ in-class learning experience and pave the way for the students to begin their research-related assignments in the field of dielectrics and electrical insulation. This is in line with UTM’s initiative to promote teaching-research nexus among the students to ensure that teaching and learning activities of the students are enhanced through research experience.

The 2019 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Malaysia Chapter was successfully held on 19th January 2019 at Dorsett, Putrajaya, Malaysia.

The meeting was attended by active members of IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter. The meeting began with a welcoming address by the 2018 Chapter Chair, endorsement of 2018 AGM’s meeting minutes, 2018 Chapter activities report, 2018 Chapter account report, dissolution of 2018 committee members and election of 2019 committee members.

18th January 2019: Visit to UPNM High Voltage Laboratory

In conjunction with the Malaysian High Voltage Network (MyHVnet) AGM held at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) on 18th July 2019, members of IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Malaysia Chapter and Malaysian High Voltage Network (MyHVnet) visited UPNM High Voltage Laboratory.

During the visit, Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Taufiq Ishak, the supervisor of the lab, introduced various high voltage engineering facilities available in the lab to the visitors. Then, a short demonstration on breakdown in air under high impulse voltage was conducted by Dr. Taufiq. Dr. Taufiq welcomed the visitors to use the lab facilities anytime for research and teaching purposes and also encouraged collaborations related to high voltage engineering activities.

18th January 2019: First Committee Meeting of ICPADM 2021

The first committee meeting of the International Conference on the Properties and Applications of Dielectric Materials (ICPADM) 2021 was successfully held at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) on 18 January 2019, in conjunction with the 2019 MyHVnet Annual General Meeting (AGM). The meeting was attended by committee members of ICPADM 2021 from different universities and industries across Malaysia.

The meeting began with opening remarks by Prof. Dr. Zulkurnain Abdul Malek of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, the General Chair of ICPADM 2021. Prof. Dr. Zulkurnain then briefed the committee members on ICPADM, a fully sponsored conference by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS). The conference will be held in Malaysia in 2021 and as such, much work is currently being planned to ensure the success of the conference.

ICPADM is a conference combining research and application practice in dielectrics covering the general areas of electrical insulation in power equipment and cables, outdoor insulators and bushings, monitoring and diagnosis of insulation degradation, insulation for HVDC systems, ageing and life expectancy of insulation, dielectric phenomena and applications, partial discharges, electrical and water treeing and surface tracking, electrical conduction and breakdown in dielectrics, surface and interfacial phenomena, nano-technology and nano-dielectrics, space charge and its effects, new and functional dielectrics, dielectric materials for electronics and photonics, eco-friendly dielectrics, bio-dielectrics, dielectrics for superconducting applications, new diagnostic applications.

During the committee meeting, expectations of ICPADM 2021, which were discussed with Dr. Harry Orton, the Chair of the International Advisory Committee of ICPADM, during his visit to Malaysia in August 2018, were highlighted to the committee members. This would ensure that the committee members had a good grasp of ICPADM 2021 before embarking on their roles as committee members, as follows:

18th January 2019: Co-organising 2019 MyHVnet AGM

Malaysian High Voltage Network’s (MyHVnet) 2019 Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on 18 January 2019 at the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM). It was attended by about 40 high voltage experts from different universities and industries across Malaysia. The meeting was also co-organised by IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter members.

The AGM began with its 2017/2018 Chairman Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Zainal Abidin Ab. Kadir of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) delivering his opening speech. Prof. Zainal also extended his warm welcome to new members of MyHVnet. This was followed by the endorsement of the 2018 AGM minutes and 2018 treasurer’s report. Prior to the dissolution of the 2017/2018 committee, Prof. Zainal thanked all the 2017/2018 committee members and all MyHVnet members for their voluntary and co-operative effort to ensure the success of MyHVnet under his leadership.

Among the highlights concluded from the 2019 MyHVnet AGM were the coordination of the competence requirements of high voltage related personnels, the suggestions of industrial related activities and the planning of the International Conference on the Properties and Applications of Dielectric Materials (ICPADM) 2021.
