15th January 2019: Demonstration of High Voltage Experiments to APU Staffs

On 15th January 2019, five academic staffs from Asia Pacific University (APU) of Technology and Innovation, Kuala Lumpur, visited the University of Malaya High Voltage Laboratory (UMHVL) in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya.

During the visit, the Head of UMHVL and the Secretary of IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Malaysia Chapter, Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Hazlee Azil Illias, demonstrated high voltage experiments to the APU staffs in the lab. The experiments include electrical breakdown in an air gap under AC, DC and impulse voltages using different electrode shapes. The demonstration was held as part of the preparation for the lab session for APU undergraduate students.

23rd October 2018: Industrial Visit to Gurun HVDC Station

On 23 October 2018, an industrial visit was carried out by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter at HVDC Station, Gurun, Kedah. The industrial visit, led by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohamad Kamarol Mohd Jamil and Ir. Dr. Nor Asiah Muhamad, was participated by 22 undergraduate and 1 PhD students of USM. The main objective of the visit was to expose the students to DC power system network and obtain a better understanding on the operation of each equipment involved.

9th November 2018: Discussion on Safety and Competency Requirement of High Voltage Lab with Energy Commission Malaysia

On 9 November2018, a discussion session about the safety precautions on using high voltage equipment was held by Malaysian High Voltage Network (MyHVnet) and IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter with the Energy Commission (EC), Malaysia, at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The conglomerates joining the discussion include staff from UPM, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia(UPNM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad Research Sdn. Bhd. (TNBR).

The discussion, carried out along with hands-on safety demonstrations by Prof. Ir.Dr. Mohd. Zainal Abidin Ab Kadir (Chairman of MyHVnet), is in line with Malaysian high voltage community’s awareness in addressing safety and the competency requirement issues related to high voltage laboratories in Malaysia. Through the discussion, it is hoped that MyHVnet, DEIS Malaysia and EC would continue to work closely and better communicate in issues relevant to high voltage laboratory safety and competency requirement in Malaysia.

3rd – 4th December 2018: Membership Drive Activity

In conjunction with the 2018 IEEE Power and Energy Conference held at Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, on 3-4 December 2018, a DEIS membership drive activity was carried out to promote the DEIS membership to the conference attendees and to bring awareness to them on the presence of the IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter.

The IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter was established in Malaysia in May 2015 with the aims to enhance networking and stimulate research and development in the field of dielectrics and electrical insulation in Malaysia. Its field of interest is in line with that of DEIS, i.e., the study and application of dielectric phenomena and behavior and the development, characterization and application of all gaseous, liquid and solid electrical insulating materials and systems utilized in electrical and electronic equipment.

The IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter hopes to promote the close cooperation and exchange of technical information among its members. The IEEE DEIS members will have the opportunity of networking with a large number of experts worldwide, sharing the results of their research activities and remain informed with the latest developments in their field. 13th August 2018: Dielectric Tutorial

A Dielectric Tutorial was successfully organised by the IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter on 13th August 2018 at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The tutorial was officiated by the Vice Chair of the IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohamad Kamarol Mohd Jamil. The tutorial was delivered by Prof. Satoshi Matsumoto from the Shibaura Institute of Technology, Japan, with the topic “Analysis of Over-shoot in Impulse Test and Evaluation of Waveform Parameters for Oscillating Impulse for High Voltage Test (and Detection of GHz Electromagnetic Waveforms Emitted from partial Discharge)”. The committee members of the DEIS Malaysia Chapter wish to express their sincere thanks to Prof. Satoshi Matsumoto for his willingness to share his expertise in the field of impulse testing with the Malaysian community.

26th July 2018: Visit to UNITEN High Voltage Laboratory

In conjunction with the Institute of Power Engineering Technical Lecture held at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) on 26th July 2018, members of IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Malaysia Chapter and Malaysian High Voltage Network (MyHVnet) and participants of the lecture visited UNITEN’s High Voltage Laboratory.

During the visit, Dr. Muhamad Safwan Abd Rahman introduced various high voltage research facilities available at the laboratory and briefed the visitors on the research activities carried out at the laboratory. The main objectives of the visit were to expose the visitors on the high voltage facilities available at UNITEN and to initiate potential collaborations relevant to high voltage engineering. DEIS members also took the opportunity to promote DEIS to the visitors and encourage them to become members of DEIS.

26th July 2018: Institute of Power Engineering Technical Lecture, UNITEN

On 26th July 2018, a technical lecture was held by the Institute of Power Engineering (IPE), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) together with the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Malaysia Chapter and Malaysian High Voltage Network (MyHVnet) at UNITEN Kajang. The lecture was conducted by Professor George Chen from the University of Southampton, UK, on three topics, namely, “Diagnostic Testing and Development of HVDC Cables”, “Nanodielectrics and Their Applications” and “Space Charge Measurements”. About 50 participants including students, lecturers and engineers attended the lecture.

During the lecture, Professor George Chen shared with the audience on the fundamentals of HVDC cables, including an overview of HVDC cables, testing methods commonly applied for HVDC cables and the latest developments in HVDC cables. Recent research trends in nanodielectrics were also emphasised, and the potential applications of nanodielectrics in addressing HVDC cable needs were highlighted. Furthermore, appropriate use of space charge measurement techniques in diagnosing HVDC cables and materials was also addressed to the audience.

The committee members of the DEIS Malaysia Chapter wish to express their sincere thanks to Professor George Chen for his willingness to share his expertise in the field of HVDC cables, nanodielectrics and space charge measurements with the Malaysian community. Co-operation and support from the members of UNITEN and MyHVnet were also acknowledged for making the technical lecture a successful event.

DEIS Malaysia Chapter Sponsors 2018 Electrical Engineering Student Symposium

JOHOR BAHRU, 3 June 2018 – The IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter offered its sponsorship to the 2018 Electrical Engineering Student Symposium (EESS) held at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, on 14-15 May 2018. The symposium was organised to showcase all final year projects from the tracks of Power Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering and Communication Engineering by the faculty’s final year students.

Among many awards presented to successful students during the award ceremony on 27 May 2018, the DEIS Malaysia Chapter presented the 2018 Student Award in High Voltage Engineering to Norhafezaidi Mat Saman with his final year project entitled “Performance Study of Non-Thermal Plasma Chamber to Remove NOx from Diesel Engine Vehicle”, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Zolkafle Buntat. The project utilised the high voltage concept, or more specifically, the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) technique, to generate non-thermal plasma (NTP) in an attempt to remove harmful NOx gases released from incomplete diesel engine combustion. Through the project, a simulation study on the geometric properties of an NTP chamber, an exhaust chamber with the capability to remove the emission of NOx species, was conducted in an attempt to obtain an effective NTP chamber. A prototype of the NTP chamber was then successfully fabricated to verify the simulation results based on the actual experiment setup, by taking into account the percentage of NOx reduction.

The DEIS Malaysia Chapter congratulates Norhafezaidi on his excellent achievement through his final year project. The DEIS Malaysia Chapter wishes him the best in his future undertakings and hopes that he will continue to contribute in the field of high voltage engineering.

3rd May 2018: Taylor’s University visit to University of Malaya High Voltage Laboratory

Two academic staffs and 10 undergraduate students from Taylor’s University, Selangor visited the University of Malaya High Voltage Laboratory (UMHVL) in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya on 3rd May 2018. The visit was part of their educational activities.

During the visit, the visitors were given a briefing about breakdown phenomena across a spark gap. Then, demonstration on breakdown phenomena across a spark gap under AC, DC and impulse voltages using various electrode shapes was performed in front of the visitors in the high voltage laboratory.
